Lesson 6

You should be further exploring poetry as a verbal/auditory/performative art form. Expose yourself as much as possible to poetry out loud. Find videos of people reading poetry and look at how they use gesture and motion to convey the meaning and feeling of the words.

What to Read:

  1. Read about the poetic term “ekphrasis” and John Keats’ “Ode On a Grecian Urn.”
  2. Nude Descending” by Alicia Ostriker and the painting which inspired the poem: Nude Descending a Staircaseby Marcel Duchamp.
  3. To Bessie Drennan” by Mark Doty. You should also take a look at Bessie Drennan’s artwork, specifically Crossroads.
  4. Visit the website of The Poetry Foundationand have a look around. Explore some poems and poets. You’ll eventually be selecting a poem as your subject for essay two, so now is the time to find poetry which floats your boat.

Informal Writing Four: Responding to Poetry Out Loud

This week I would like for you to choose an audio file, a YouTube video, or other audio-driven or visually performative version of a poem and discuss the ways in which the audio or video version of a poem has a different impact than that of simply reading it on the page. Think about comparing this to the difference between reading about a piece of art versus seeing the piece.

Expectations:

  • An identification of your poem, the poet, and how you accessed the poem
  • 500 words minimum
  •  Proper citation of the media you discuss

 Lesson 6 Submission Checklist:

  1. Informal Writing #4
  2. Discussion #5 (remember to also paste your discussion post into Word and submit to the assignments tab in Canvas).
